THE HANSKÜHNENBURG HIKING TOUR
One of the most popular hiking destinations in the south west Harz is the mountain hut Hanskühnenburg Trail, in fields known as, "Auf dem Acker," in the middle of the Harz National Park. It is 811 meters above sea level and has one of the highest forest restaurants in the Harz National Park. The name "Acker (field)" has nothing to do with agriculture - it comes from the Middle High German "agger" meaning ridge or wall - this is the geographical shape of the Acker Ridge.
Here you can find some new strength with the help of the excellent rustic forest restaurant. Much needed drinks and a delicious hearty meal served from the kitchen. There are some wonderful panoramic views from the 20 meter high observation tower. On a clear day you can see the Brocken, the Wurmberg and far into the foothills of the south Harz. Just 300 meters northeast is the legendary Hanskühnenburg Crag (Hanskühnenburg Klippe) which was visited by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1784.
On foot, mountain bike or with cross-country skis in the winter you can reach the Hanskühnenburg in several ways.
The longest route leads from Tilman-Riemenschneider-Haus in Osterode am Harz to the Hanskühnenburg. It is a very nice varied trail with various inclines. You get magnificent views towards the Seilerklippen.
Or you can take your car towards Riefensbeek from Osterode am Harz, and park at the Söse Dam. Here, you can reach Hanskühnenburg over the dam crest on the well-signposted Harzer Baudenstieg trail.
Take the car from Osterode am Harz direction Riefensbeek to the auxiliary dam. Cross the dam and park in the car park. Here you can hike to the Hanskühnenburg on a paved trail, although please be aware that the path does get steep at the end.
Take the car from Osterode am Harz to the centre of Riefensbeek (church car park). From there you can reach Hanskühnenburg via the shortest and sometimes twisted narrow trail. The trail is quite steep.
